Supplement Review- Androstenedione
One of the well-known supplements is Androstenedione that helps to mimic the steroid effects. It increases the level of testosterone in males and hence enhances the strength and lean muscle mass. It also regulates the sex drive in men.
Some of the high profile athletes used this supplement and broke the previous records in their sport. It is a direct precursor of testosterone and has been banned by most athletic organizations like:
- NFL (National Football League)
- IOC (The International Olympic Committee)
- NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)
- NABF (North American Boxing Federation)
- Men’s and Women’s Professional Tennis
- NGA (National Gym Association)
Due to the unknowns of this supplement, the exact dosages of Androstenedione haven’t been determined. But according to a research, a significant increase in the testosterone level was observed by giving 50-100mg of Androstenedione per day to men. It is observed that you may experience added strength by taking this supplement one hour before training; this is because of the intermediate increase in the testosterone levels.
To maximize its benefits, some other supplements can also be added to Androstenedione cycle such as Tribulus, DHEA and Chrysin. As zinc is a mineral that increases the natural testosterone level so it may also be added to this supplement.
In men, some side-effects have been seen due to the use of Androstenedione and that are:
- Breast tissue (gynecomastia)
- Enlarged Prostrate
- Water retention
- Increased sex drive
- Acne
- Impotence
- Risks of glandular cancers
It is suggested that this supplement should no longer be taken than 4-8 weeks and should be followed 4-8 weeks off time. It can have the irreversible side effects in women like enlarged clitoris, deepened voice and body hair. It is produced in adrenal glands and gonads of our body and is found in the pollen of Scotch Pine trees.
